Why two WNBA Finals games moved to Atlanta’s larger arena

The venue change gave the Dream more seating for its first Finals game in Atlanta since 2013, and it also moved Game 3 forward a day and Game 4 to an earlier tip.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • The WNBA moved Finals Games 3 and 4 to State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
  • Game 3 moved from October 22 to October 21, while Game 4 stayed on October 24 and shifted to a 1 p.m. ET tip.
  • The league described the larger venue as a way to expand seating for Atlanta’s first Finals game in the local market since 2013.

The move covered two Finals games

On October 13, the WNBA announced that Atlanta Dream home games 3 and 4 of the Finals would be played at State Farm Arena. The Golden State Valkyries hosted Games 1 and 2 at Chase Center in San Francisco. The league’s announcement applied to Atlanta’s two home games in the best-of-seven series, not the entire Finals schedule. The first two games were scheduled for October 17 and 19, before Atlanta’s pair.

The change joined two separate pieces of information: a larger venue and a revised calendar. Game 3 moved from Thursday, October 22 to Wednesday, October 21. Game 4 remained on Saturday, October 24, but its tip moved from 3:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern Time. That matters for people planning travel or watching from home, because a venue update can also change when the event begins.

The larger arena addressed a seating question

The WNBA said State Farm Arena would dramatically expand seating capacity and let the Dream host the first Finals game in the Atlanta market since 2013. Axios Atlanta reported that fans had questioned whether Gateway Center Arena, the Dream’s home since 2021, could accommodate demand for a Finals game. The team had already announced a multi-year move to State Farm Arena beginning in 2027.

The seating estimates in coverage are not consistent. Axios described Gateway Center as a 5,000-seat arena and State Farm Arena as nearly 16,000; the AP described Gateway Center as 3,500 and State Farm Arena as more than 17,000. Subtracting those approximate figures implies nearly 11,000 or more than 13,500 additional seats, depending on the source. Using each outlet’s own figures yields ratios of about 3.2 to 1 for Axios and more than 4.8 to 1 for AP. These calculations use incompatible estimates; neither source gives its counting basis or event configuration, so they are not an official capacity comparison.

The WNBA said the larger arena would give more fans across the Southeast a chance to attend. That is the league’s stated aim; capacity figures do not show which seats were placed on sale or whether one ticket covered both games.

Game 3 moved forward by one day

The original Game 3 date was Thursday, October 22. The WNBA’s update changed it to Wednesday, October 21 at 8 p.m. ET. Axios reported that October 22 already had a concert scheduled at State Farm Arena. Moving the game forward kept the Finals in the larger arena while avoiding that date conflict.

This is why a reader should keep the event date beside the arena name. A search result or saved calendar from the earlier schedule could still show October 22, even though the updated league notice named October 21. The change affected the game’s date and location, while the series remained the same best-of-seven matchup. The venue notice, not an older preview, is the source for the revised Game 3 listing.

Game 4 also received an earlier tip

Game 4 remained scheduled for Saturday, October 24, but the WNBA’s updated release moved its tip from 3:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. ET and lists NBC and Peacock as the national platforms. The league’s postseason FAQ still shows 3:30 p.m., so the two WNBA pages do not match. The tip moved 2.5 hours earlier on the same date, while Game 3 moved to a different day.

The new time also fits the arena’s other basketball event that evening. The Atlanta Hawks’ regular-season home opener against the Houston Rockets was moved to 8:30 p.m. ET. State Farm Arena described the date as a basketball doubleheader and credited the teams, leagues and broadcasters with coordinating the schedule. Fans should treat the afternoon and evening games as separate events and verify ticket access for each one.

The move follows the Finals’ home-court pattern

The WNBA Finals use a 2-2-1-1-1 schedule. The higher-seeded team opens with Games 1 and 2 at home, the lower-seeded team hosts Games 3 and 4, and any remaining games alternate. In 2026, Golden State hosted the opening pair; Atlanta’s two home games shifted to State Farm Arena.

Moving only Games 3 and 4 preserved the series’ venue order while giving Atlanta a larger building for its first Finals home game in the local market since 2013. The Dream’s planned move to State Farm Arena for its full 2027 home schedule is a separate decision. The 2026 announcement did not mean the team had already moved every game of its 2026 season.

Several calendars had to be coordinated

The WNBA’s October 13 notice thanked the Dream, Valkyries, Hawks, State Farm Arena and broadcast partners for coordinating the move. State Farm Arena called the relocation a complex, short-notice effort. The statements show that the change required work across the league, both teams, the venue and broadcast partners.

The WNBA’s October 13 announcement said public ticket sales for Games 3 and 4 were scheduled to begin October 16 at 10 a.m. ET. That was the announced sale time, not an inventory count or a guarantee that every seat would be offered.

From the scheduled 1 p.m. Dream tip to the Hawks' 8:30 p.m. tip, the start times are seven and a half hours apart. That is the gap between listed starts, not a promise about when the first game ends or when the arena will reopen for the second event.

What to verify before going or watching

For Game 3, use October 21 at 8 p.m. ET at State Farm Arena, with the WNBA listing USA Network, CNBC and Peacock. For Game 4, use October 24 at 1 p.m. ET, with NBC and Peacock. Those are different dates, start times and broadcast listings, even though both games are at the same arena.

If you hold a ticket, check the venue and time printed by the ticket issuer, then confirm any entry instructions with the arena. The venue announcement does not explain ticket transfers, refunds or whether an individual ticket covers another event. For a remote viewer, check the local TV schedule or streaming service in the place where you will watch. The national U.S. listing does not establish international availability.

A venue change does not settle the series

The AP’s postgame recap reported that Games 3 and 4 sold out, but did not provide attendance totals. That result does not settle the competing venue estimates or show how many seats were offered under either Finals configuration. Home-court effects and television audiences are separate outcomes.

The practical value of the announcement is smaller and concrete: it tells fans where the Dream’s two Finals home games will be held, when they are scheduled to start and which national outlets list them. Those details help with a travel plan or viewing reminder. The league’s official update and the later NBC release carry the current Game 4 time, while the older FAQ remains a stale schedule reference.
